Higher Education: Where Can It Take You?

When deciding whether or not you want to spend all your time and money pursuing a Graduate degree you want to figure out where it can get you. Why should you further your education instead of using your well earned under-grad degree by taking the work world by storm? Here are a few things that can make you feel a bit more confident about your decision to move forward in furthering your education.

Better Job Opportunities

You are going to be eligible for a whole new bracket of job opportunities once you have completed this new degree. Take a look at the job listings online today, or in your local paper, and see what level of skill and education are required for the ones you might consider your dream job. Does your degree get you closer to those jobs? What jobs are offered at your current school level? How many more jobs open up to you if you have your new degree? If you look at the difference in opportunities between having an undergraduate and a graduate degree, the value of the investment may be clearer.  To ensure the program is successfully helping their students, take a look at the work graduate degree recipients transition to after graduation.

Higher Pay

Your new degree may open the way to higher pay. New skills and level of education are justification for a pay raise or increase in your current position. You may be eligible for a promotion within your current company following your completion of the new degree. You also may be in a field where your pay is directly determined by your level of education, which means that once you graduate, you can look forward to increased salary.

More Competitive in the Job Market

Having new and current skills in an ever changing job market makes you extremely competitive. In a world where technology and our understanding of the world is always changing, having the most up to date and current education gives you an edge over others that may have a more dated bag of skills. In addition to having the most current education, having an advanced degree will also put you a step above others who are not as advanced that may be applying for the same jobs. You will have that much more going for you when you apply for positions.

Authority in Your Field

Once you have your new degree, you will have new credentials and an increased authority within your field. With each new increase in your education level, you will gain more respect with your colleagues and enter a new level of understanding and respect for yourself.

Choose carefully

Being admitted to a particular graduate degree program is great, but don’t assume it’s a golden ticket.  Sometimes, a program may not be the right fit for your needs.  If they are asking you to take out 100% student loans to cover all costs, that is a major investment, so make sure a clear career path is supplied by what is being studied.
