There are a few jobs that do require a graduate degree, professional positions that cannot be obtained without higher education. These are positions that even with hard work and the willingness to start out at entry level and work your way up, you cannot hold unless you have that grad degree.
To be a doctor or a physician’s assistant, you have to continue your education far past that of an undergraduate degree program. You know obviously that it takes many years to become a MD and a physician assistant requires just as much hard work. Doctors and physician assistants work hand in hand and require a lot of the same knowledge and education. Generally many years of education past the bachelor’s degree and experience in the field are required to hold one of these job titles, their pay, however, is some of the highest, so the degree can pay off long term.
Social Workers often times help people that are dealing with traumatic and difficult situations in their lives. Social Workers need practical and advanced training to handle the numerous issues that are brought to them by people in need. Development through entry level employment within the field is often helpful when determining the exact degree tract to follow.
In the same category as social workers, school counselors need to be certified and trained to handle a wide range of issues and situations they may encounter when dealing with their students and staff. This training and education is specialized and varies based on the ages of the students they deal with. A vast understanding of how to properly advise individuals and handle delicate situations is necessary; this is a level of in depth education that is not provided until you enter a graduate program. Hands on experience with individuals are also usually a requirement before obtaining a position in a school.
A school administrator must be a highly knowledgeable and trusted individual, they are in charge of overseeing and making decisions for entire bodies of students and staff. Whether their position is in early or college education, or anywhere in between, they must be educated in and responsible for the curriculum and safety of their entire facility. A Master’s degree is required at the very least, in some cases, a doctorate is preferred.
A family therapist must be trained to handle a family member of any age and understand the circumstances that may be affecting their behavior and actions. They must understand the human mind and its motivations, and must be able to read physical and verbal cues, indicating the true feelings of an individual. They must understand in depth the dynamics of a variety of family structures and have the knowledge to provide advice for individuals and families and in some cases write prescriptions. All of the knowledge and understanding that a counselor uses to do his/her job are advanced and require a higher degree. There is usually a level of experience in the field that is required in addition to a higher education.
